i stumbled upon this great site, Advertising for Peanuts, a year back when i was creating this blog. every day, i’ll make it a point to check for new entries. he’s a very good writer and truly understands the mechanics of suits-clients-creatives – something which i really really appreciate alot. i was at a loss of words when i read today’s entry because it totally captured what i want to say today! here’s it:-
Some of the best advice I got when I started out in this biz was actually given to me by our own Peanuts writer Chairman Jimmy. He said, “You have to love the process of advertising, not the ads.”
It was kind of hard to accept at first. All that time flipping through the award annuals got me really loving all those awesome, pretty, and oh so clever ads. I wanted to make some of those.
But I’ve quickly come to understand from my own experience what he meant. The process of advertising is about making great ideas and then watching them die. And then coming up with new ideas, making better ads, and watching those die and then doing it all over again.
If you’re in this game because you really love ads, the process will probably just make you one sad, bitter, pissed off person. But if you’re in this business because you love the challenge of starting from scratch for the seventh time, even after you feel like the well has gone dry, and working late on something that will most likely die, then you’re probably going to end up making ads that a lot of other people really love.

so if you’re feeling jaded, take a break and think why you got into this business. if you are in this just coz you like beautiful ads (and want to put your name on it), i think it’ll be much better if you become the client. that way, you can still enjoy beautiful ads without the ’suffering’.
for now, i think i’ll stay where i am currently.
excellent commercial! love the copy and the interesting video/picture references with it.
starring gary oldman:
one year after ”ze german coastguard” sank the “thinking” ship and had crazy signs in different places of the world, it’s time for another amusing Berlitz commercial!
enjoy! see whether you get it.
usefuler!!!

fellow colleague saw this bus stop ad on her way to work and thought to share with the whole agency. such copywriting boo boo is hard to come by (the magazine peeps must be dumb to think that it’s funny), so enjoy!
mocca.com is a recently launched online classified ads portal. it encourages users to create and upload videos of the item they are selling/looking for; possibly to make the site more interesting for everyone. mocca’s ad campaign revolves around the same idea, with a strong dosage of the lian-beng flavor. if you can recognize these ads, you’re definitely a singaporean!
some think it’s super bad work with no thought put into it. but hey! i think it works really well! granted it’s not award winning material, but it definitely caught alot of people’s attention and i’m pretty sure most singaporeans know what mocca.com is! try asking them what is mocca.com and what is ST701 (another online classified ads site). i think you know how people will respond to that question, don’t you?
Stop dreaming. Be somebody.
thought this was a really great ad. always love navy ads as they are superbly creative and you don’t normally expect this from a government body. was always admiring the old work in the archives when i was working there. glad the clients are open to creative work!
Agency: Saatchi & Saatchi, Singapore
Creative Team: Richard Copping, Stuart Harricks (and Juggi, who has gone to BBDO)
sent an email to my agency copywriter (yes, the same one in ysw #18 and 19) to review a tvc storyboard and got this autoreply from her:
Our office will be closed for the holidays from Dec 24 – Jan 1. Should you require an urgent headline, may I recommend: www.instantheadlines.com.
Otherwise, I’ll be back on Jan 2nd with a fresh mind and hopefully, no new year resolutions.
cheers,
G
time to turn off that auto reply!
tear off your dec 07 calendar page and…

happy new year everyone! hope you had a great countdown party yesterday! 2007 was a great year for me, especially getting my first step in the ad industry.
thought i shall do a quick recollection of some of my fave ads which i’ve posted over the past year (dec 06 – dec 07). good ads deserve to be mentioned a second time! here goes:
dec 06: i had a hard time deciding between the thai ads and adidas jose +10 campaign. in the end, i thought to myself – hey! give them both the highlight!
jan 07: true classic, i must say. the series of mac ads are all well written and that successfully lured me over to the mac world! also check out their latest festive ads while you’re at it.
feb 07: incredible timing. they managed to hit their ad out at the right period!
mar 07: once again, adidas wins hands down!
apr 07: found out from my agency copywriter that the madrid metro ad was half shot half animated. still wondering how they put it together…
may 07: we need more great guerilla marketing like this in singapore!
jun 07: the saving grace for PCs.
jul 07: great work done by the agency i’m working at now.
aug 07: the copywriter did a damn good job for Alestra!
sep 07: one can only dream that some brave soul will get this done on singapore roads.
oct 07: one more for my agency!
nov 07: save the best for the last. one liner rocks! check out these H&M ads.
dec 07: this ad makes you pause and think about what’s happening around the world.
cheers to more great ads in 2008!
